Man to Man - disgruntled viewer

Let me first say I am a huge fan of Darkplace. Got the DVD today, and have loved watching "what still points forward the way for humanity".

I truly believe Darkplace is as close to a comedy masterpiece anybody's got for some time. However...

With Man to Man they've dropped a huge smelly fart in a lift. Or clanger, in more popular vernacular. [I'm starting to speak like Garth].

I can only think they've written the near-stultifying, uncomposed tripe - served up this evening - to make abundantly clear to Channel Four - the dearth of imaginative comedy and the Channel's seeming inability to spot good from bad.

Perhaps, it's a two fingered gesture for no second series or the way they've been treated by C4.

I don't know.

It's either that, or they've completely lost their minds or imagination. Perhaps both. Or all three. ;-)

Maybe Darkplace really was just too damn out there and too god damn crazy. It sure was hugely original/imaginative, intelligent, laugh out loud, intuitive/quirky British comedy. All that Man to Man wasn't.

Top of Division 2! :D

I was typing a reply, until I realised I'd typed the same thing on imdb:

It pains me to say that I didn't really enjoy it.

I just don't think the pair are suited to this type of show. There are plenty of shows I could imagine them doing and being hilarious, and a chat show isn't really on the list.

War of the Wasps was pretty good though - that's the kind of thing they should do for a Darkplace movie.

Although, I think there's a chance the series will get better.. not just because they always do, but because maybe the Garth Marenghi character just wasn't suited.

He should've been appearing to promote Darkplace on DVD.. that might've given it a jumpstart.

Having been in the episode for the show tonight i must admit that its transfer to tv wasn't the best but it was still very funny. Of course having heard the jokes previously I sort of knew what was coming. There was quite a bit of improv left in the show (dean's portaloo part) and the edit was very good.

The concept is a very hard one to pull off in my opinion. I always thought that 'knowing me, knowing you', whilst very funny in parts, was not justified as you may have seen it live. Nevertheless i still bought the DVD as it is still very funny. If there was more interaction, maybe with another character (Matt Berry and others) it would have added to it, im sure this was taken into consideration. Maybe this was just there to appeal to a broader audience?

Ill look forward to seeing the other characters in the coming weeks. In my opinion it's the funniest thing on tv for the moment...

THAT'S IT! You've hit it. Matt should definitely be there. Like in real chat shows, when the guests stick around to sometimes join in. Whenever the 3 are together, it's chemistry.. it's gold. Even on the commentaries (should that be "especially on the commentaries"?).

I'm still very eager to see the rest.

I thought it was good.

The trouble for us Darkplace fans is that we've hyped it, with the exception of the select few who got to see the filming, and when you set standards so high, you're always going to be a little disappointed.

I agree with the format not suiting their humour, which is the reason why the wasp and painting sketches were the funniest parts.

Perhaps they could do that for a new series, !@#$ film night, not too disimilar to my life in film, only smothered in true darkplace humour, and with plenty of crappy effects.

BUG OFF!!! emoticon

Unfortuantly I dozed off half way through. It was ok, but not Darkplace. My main gripe is the live audience bit. I mean everything about Darkplace, including the DVD signing, is a spoof. But on that show you have the audience laughing at stuff that they wouldn't if it was like Darkplace. I mean there isn't supposed to be laughter from the TV when Dean's acting is terrible in Darkplace and we laugh because of it. With Man to man it sort of broke that "fake show" feel. The audience knew it was a fake show and it was too much in my face. A bit like watching MASH with the canned laughter. Not quite right (even though that is the original american version)...

Cheers

I was in the audience when they recorded the trailers that you've probably seen on C4 for the past few weeks. I SWEAR they have beefed up the laughter track! It sounds terrible and cringeworthy on TV but when we saw it live it was genuinely fairly funny (especially as he recorded a load of them one after the other).

I havent seen last nights episode yet but i'll get round to it soon.

I find it hard to admit to myself that I didnt like it emoticon

I think it would of been better filmed without an audience, (thought if you were in the audience im sure it would of been great).

Not that much of it made me laugh, just the odd bit, like garth getting stuck whilst closing the door ha. The loud laughter was all a bit too much.

Dean didnt seem like Dean to me, he seemed more like Moss for some reason damnit.

I think the episodes with Matthew Holness playing other characters apart from Garth Marenghi will be far funnier.

I think because we have seen the Dean Learner - Garth Marenghi relationship played out SO much, it doesn't have the same sort of balls to the wall laughter effect anymore.

I know the episode I was in the audience for, with Holness playing the hypnotist, was absolutely hilarious so I won't judge the show too harshly until that episode comes around.

Saying that though I did find the first episode very funny, especially the clip from the movie.
